Pregnancy is a roller coaster ride. The nausea, the vomiting, the backaches, the food cravings, the mood swings, seem endless. You just can’t wait for the baby to come out so that it’s over. As providers of professional after birth care in Kochi, here are 10 things you can expect after birth:
1. Blood
Within hours after birth, you will bleeding like a period. This is called Lochia. Its dark red for the first few days, then it gets lighter. By day 14, its almost pink. For some women, post delivery bleeding will be continuous for 6 weeks, while its can be irregular flow from the 3rd day after birth. Both are normal. So stock up on sanitary napkins.
2. Pain
Your body underwent a lot of changes to nurture your baby inside you. Be it vaginal birth or a C-section, the body was subject to trauma. In a vaginal birth, your pain will depend on the tear occurred during birth. A C-section is a major surgery. As you move, your stitches may hurt. You have to move about to avoid blood clots and help your body heal after delivery.
3. Engorged breasts
Your little one needs nutrition and your body is preparing it. At first, you may wonder what is happening. Your breasts may feel full, warm, tender and heavy; not to worry. Feed your baby every 1-2 hours or on demand. Putting a warm towel on your breasts will help your milk flow easily. Invest in good, supportive bras.
4. Cramps
Your uterus was growing and now that the baby is born, it begins to shrink. 6 weeks after birth, the uterus shrinks from about 1 kilogram at birth to about the size of a pear. This shrinking may cause cramps. These cramps also help your milk production. It is a reminder that your body is healing.
5. Discomfort in Vaginal area
If you have had a vaginal delivery, you are likely to have a few stitches after the baby is born. If you also had an episiotomy, where the gynaecologist has had to cut/tear your perineum to let your baby out easily, undoubtedly, you will need more stitches. This can be uncomfortable especially when you have to go to the toilet.
6. Constipation
Your body is reverting to the pre- pregnancy state. A lot of hormones are working thereby making you constipated. Sometimes this may lead to Haemorrhoids. To avoid this, your doctor will prescribe stool softeners that will help you poop easily.
7. Hairfall
The thick hair that you had during your pregnancy was due to an increase in estrogen level. After birth, the level of estrogen will fall, thereby leading to hairfall. This is normal.
8.Tired
Between caring for your newborn and recovering from childbirth it is normal to feel overwhelmed. You may experience mood swings and feel like crying for no reason. This is called baby blues and you have no cause to worry. If you feel unable to cope with everyday situations, thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, feeling anxious, panicked or scared most of the day, meet your doctor immediately. These are signs of postpartum depression.
